Blizzard announced changes to some of the playtime purchasing options for World of Warcraft

On March 25, Blizzard announced changes to some of the playtime purchasing options for World of Warcraft. While the subscription plans remain unchanged, this is not the case for purchases without monthly direct debit.

In a post to the official World of Warcraft forums, community manager Bornakk announced the shop change after a recent review of services. The previously purchasable game time options of 30, 90, and 180 days are no longer available to players. Instead, a 60 day game time option costing $29.99 USD will replace all three as the only offer going forward.

Those looking for month-to-month subscriptions still have the option by providing Blizzard with their debit or credit card details for recurring subscription. In fact, the only way to get 30 months of play time in World of Warcraft thanks to these changes would be to subscribe and cancel the recurring subscription.

It is important to note that since these changes affect overall World of Warcraft accounts, they will also be affected World of Warcraft Classic.

Blizzard didn’t offer much of an explanation in its announcement post, simply saying: “We recently conducted a review on the available services in all currencies. Based on this, we have decided to alter the available Game Time options in the Blizzard Shop.

“We appreciate that players choose to spend their time with World of Warcraft, and we are committed to ensuring the game continues to provide players with great entertainment value.”

The move is seen as a push towards subscriptions. A six-month subscription to the famous MMO costs £8.69 a month, a three-month subscription costs £9.39 a month, and a one-month subscription costs £9.99 a month.

A unique option valid for 60 days of play
This method of purchase was very popular, in particular to avoid direct debit from the associated bank card. But despite this, Blizzard has chosen to remove the multiple options offered to leave only the purchase of 60 days of play. Be careful though because if you want to take advantage of it, do not go to the “Subscriptions” tab of the Online Store. The in-game time purchase can be found under the “In-Game Services” category.

While this doesn't affect anyone paying through an automatic subscription, the change drastically hits those who bought game time using their Blizzard Balance. With the WoW Token being introduced several years ago and how much easier it is to make gold nowadays, many savvy players could make enough to cover the cost of 30 days or buy additional months at a slightly cheaper price. After today's update, newcomers and those with less gold will need to farm twice the usual amount for their game time while purchasing additional months no longer come as a discount.Though the announcement was confusing to many players, there are still two ways to purchase only 30 days at a time. The first choice is to sign up for a subscription with a 1-month billing cycle and immediately cancel it to prevent the next payment charge after one month. Alternatively, players can still purchase a WoW Token from the in-game Auction House and redeem it for game time instead of converting it to $15 USD of Blizzard Balance. Both methods aren't exactly straightforward but get the same results for those min-maxing their budget and desire to play World of Warcraft each month.
